Wedding Ring Search Is Over

That is it. The wedding ring search is finally over ! I am really happy that i do not need to go to all the stores anymore ! What a relief! I know some girls love shopping, but i personally shop the best through my computer screen :)

So i went today to all the jewel stores in our little town and after that i was sure. There is one ring i really want ! So this Lily ring will be my in a 2-3 weeks times as it was needed to be ordered. And got some discount on it.

Happy Happy Joy Joy :)

So, this is my wedding ring! But my will be in white gold! <3 Can't wait to have it here :) It doesn't have lots of bling bling , has only one bigger diamond, but i feel it's gorgeous anyway ^^

Diamond value and quality

        photo

I have in a little hurry in choosing a wedding ring. But if other girls would finally make a decision and that's it, i become more and more interested in what I'm really buying. So yes, I'm interested in DIAMONDS. I have this little issue with my own personality. When i don't know something - i learn, when i am curious about something - i search for information. So not as surprisingly I've started reading everything i can find on diamonds and what should i personally know when buying one.

I remember how some years ago i heard that when choosing diamond you should choose that stone that is the most bright and sparkle. In a way this description of a quality diamond is true. As the better cut and the better colour - the better the end sparkle and beauty of the diamond. But if you are like me, you would really want to know more about diamonds and the quality of them. I hope this little guide will help you out and possibly will make you search for more information.

There are three categories which will determine diamond's total quality. All three of them will drastically affect on the price of the diamond but not necessarily will affect on the look of the diamond.

1. DESIGN

Basically design is the amount of carat in the diamond or if saying more clearly "How Big The Diamond Is ":)

one metric carat = 200 mg = 1/5 gram.

The carat is subdivided into tenth, hundredth and lately even thousandth. Very small brilliants are measured in "points"; one "point" is equal to one hundredth of a carat (0.01 ct).

A carat is also subdivided into "grains" - a unit of weights used for pearls where one carat = four grains. A one-carater therefore is also a four-grainer. The term "one-carater" does not only refer to a diamond of exactly 1.00 ct, but comprises diamonds within a certain weight zone, which can be described as follows:

one-carater (four-grainer) 0.95-1.05 ct
three-quarter carater (three-grainer) 0.72-0.76 ct
half -carater (two-grainer) 0.47-0.56 ct
quarter-carater (one-grainer) 0.23-0.26 ct

Commercially, however, diamonds of one group are priced differently: a brilliant of 0.99 ct is roughly 10-15 % cheaper than a brilliant of 1.01 ct of the same quality. But the difference in size of them is so small, that you wouldn't really see it clearly.

Here are some diamond carats and the real size of the stone photo

2. CRAFTSMANSHIP

Marcel Tolkowsky's mathematical guide for perfect diamond cut  photo

Few different diamond cuts. I personally love the traditional round one the most, but pearl and marquise are close to my heart as well. <3  photo

So we determined the size of the diamond. Next comes how well diamond was cut. When you look on the diamond from the top with the loupe, you will see the cuttings looking like an arrows. When looking from the bottom of the diamond, there will be hearts shaped cuts. I would suggest to ask if you could possibly see the diamond with the louple in your jewel store.

REMEMBER: For grades F through SI, a diamond's clarity grade has an impact on the diamond's value, not on the unmagnified diamond's appearance. So you could say that diamonds with VVS and VS grades are excellent choices for both value and appearance. But if you choose to buy an I1-I3 diamond, know that some people will look at it and immediately see the flaws -- and not just experienced jewelers. You can see in the lower picture at what point the flaws in a diamond start to be seen with a naked eye.

3. FACE-UP APPEARANCE

Or the colour of the diamond. There are different names used for naming the colour of the stone. When i was in one jewel store i was told by seller that the stone was rare top wesselton colour. And honestly at that moment i had no idea what she was talking about. Yes that stone was beautiful ( and expensive ) but that name told me nothing. Luckily now i know what it means :) In the lower picture nimikkeistö = name , väri = colour . Sorry for Finnish language there, but i simply could find a better picture of all the names used for same colours.
  • GIA standards  = Gemological Institute of America's standards
  • Scan.D.N. = Scandinavian Diamond Nomenclature standards

*Warning, the colours of the diamonds are not shown there as they would be in a real life.

The whiter the diamond is - the more beautiful and expensive it is. For example price for a 1 carat diamond will rice 500-700 euros when the colour quality goes from H to G.

So basically if you want both good appearance and value for your diamond, i would suggest to choose the quality no lower than SI and the colour no lower than H (Wesselton). The diamond size and shape is something that is more of a taste thing. Then again each of the diamonds are individual, so even a low colour level and a low cutting quality can still make the diamond ring look beautiful. So don't get all blinded by the names. I just hope this information will make it easier for you to compare different stones to each other and get the right price.

There is always a little problem when buying a ring with a long line of a smaller diamonds. If you buying a solitaire diamond ring you will have a document which will tell you what size, what colour and what cut it has. But when you buy a ring with a diamond line , there is more likely to be written just an average value or a gap between which the stones are. The risk is that there can still be an even lover level stone in the ring. So i would suggest for you to take the ring to some other jewel store and ask for value check.

Finding Wedding Ring Mission

I am feeling little stressed right now because our wedding is so close by and i still do not have any kind of a wedding ring to go with my engagement ring. If you would ask my fiance , he would say that no diamond ring should be needed at all... But i feel that this is the only opportunity to have a diamond in my life. My own engagement ring is simple half round golden ring. I thought with such a simple engagement ring i would easily find something awesome to go with it... yep, i was deeply wrong there :)

The biggest issue with finding a wedding ring is my taste. I do not want millions of little diamonds on my finger. I like elegant and interesting shape and just one our a couple of diamonds. And yes this one diamond should be clearly seen and no just a little sparkle somewhere... Basically my taste is expensive :) Last winter i found one wedding ring, but honestly we couldn't afford it. Yesterday i went on a kinda real wedding ring hunt and found this two rings.

A simple and elegant white gold ring with 0,28 diamond. Timeless and fits my engagement ring perfectly as both rings have similar half round ( lord of the ring - type ) shape. I really like it, but i feel that here in Finland this is probably one of the mostly seen ring looks ? Is it little boring as well ?

And then i saw this ring... I've tried it in a white gold .. And it was simply amazing! The ring had 0,45 solitaire diamond. I would probably ask for a smaller stone of 0,40 as i think it would be more than enough bling for me and less of a price tag. Anyway i love this interesting shape of two "lily flowers" on both sides of the diamond. I like this unique look that not every single bride has on. I like this vintage feeling. If i choose this one, then i have no idea would i take it in a white gold like the one i tried in the jewel store, or should i take this one with yellow and white gold....

So what do you think ?

PS: tomorrow going to a few other jewel stores , i need to do the proper job now - Finding Wedding Ring Mission continues :)

Chousing Wedding Ring

Do you think you will be letting your groom to choose the wedding ring for you, or are you going to search for one yourself ? I'm personally wouldn't be able to let anyone else to choose something i am supposed to wear for the rest of my life. Even my engagement ring we went and choose together with my fiance. I wanted something very simple and elegant, and even tho i first wanted a white gold ring, i somehow fell i love with light yellow gold.

My simple golden 4mm engagement ring , it actually kinda has the shape like the Lord Of the Rings hehe, didn't choose because of the movie tho, but noticed similarities after i got my ring :)

So now that we finally decided on the wedding day ( 10 years since we started to date, yeah we are this slow hehe ), i have the dilemma of choosing a wedding ring to go together with my engagement ring. I know it first sounds easy to do as engagement ring is this simple, but no...

One of the problems is that i have kinda expensive taste. I do not like LOTS of bling bling, or over the top things, but i do like quality and elegance - which are always costly. I've been trying to think of the ways to get a nice but less expensive ring. Here are some things for you to think about when searching for your wedding ring.
  • One thing is sure, the jewelry is very expensive at normal jewel stores. The "air" in the ring price can be up to 50%. It comes mostly through name of the designer, workmanship and stores own profit. So if you decide to go and buy the ring from a jewel store i would recommend to try to lower the price. I know several couples that could easily get 20-25 % discount.
  • It can actually be cheaper to design your own ring from the start especially if you have  for example an old ring your want to remake into your wedding ring.
  • How about pawn shops and auctions ? You can get an old ring for almost only the gold and stone price. Some girls are hesitant to buy jewelry that someone else has used and are afraid of possible "bad karma" in it. But think about it, how sure can you be in a normal jewel store that your stone has never EVER been in someone else's ring? I honestly do not believe in any bad karma in items :)
But what ever you do , please don't EVER try something that you can't afford.... I was silly enough to try on something i lost my heart too and can't get it . Don't make my mistakes :)

This is actually a steal ring, but isn't it beautiful ?

I never thought i would actually like coloured stones, but this ring is stunning!

If you are choosing both engagement and wedding rings, why not consider making them perfectly match together ?

Your ring doesn't necessarily needs to have stone in it, your taste will determine what kind of a wedding ring you will have . Or can use really small stones.

My dream ring... <3
